[private] sing when you're winning

The room is a meadow.

The grass is deep and green, springlike. It slopes downwards, one hillock curving gently into the next. There are flowers here and there; the yellow and red of poppies, especially, stand out. Poppies are native to Kamchatka: spots of red and yellow on the western fields and on the slopes of the volcanoes. Light knows them well; it's part of his job. The hospital cultivates them.

The room is empty, and that's lucky, because Light would be hard to miss. He's moving through a sequence of positions, repeatedly. Each starts from a still position, before he draws his sword, cuts quickly to one side or both, and resheathes it, coming to rest again. Sometimes he spins to block attacks from behind. Sometimes he parries an invisible opponent.

His weight is healthier than it's been in the past, but the effect is rather like one of those poppies spinning in the wind, and always coming back to rest.

As usual, Light is sitting in the kitchen, with a plate and a journal before him. Not quite as usually, he's neglecting both of them. He stares through the paper like he doesn't see it, and he's letting the little mound of cabbage cool.

What's wrong with him today? - well, he knows what's wrong with him, and he doesn't like it.

So, what do you think? How would you have done this differently? Do all AUs suck? Let's talk.

Screened, anon, etc.

I watched him struggle with the sea, I knew that he was drowning

I will stand upon the shore with a clean heart and my song in the wind )

[Light shrugs, leaning back against the counter.]

I grew up in Japan. Tokyo. I'm probably not supposed to tell you that, either.

With Sayu long gone, Light is progressing down the corridor, checking doors. Most are open, like his backpack - though the flap's draped over the top. Occasionally one is locked, like the one he comes to now; crouching down, he removes the pack, produces a small torch and shines it into the keyhole.

It's been almost three weeks. Light is settling in.

He's cleaner than he was, differently dressed in loose, fleecy clothes - a brown sweater beneath a blue hooded jacket; he feels the cold. His hair's rough and a little frizzy, and stands out around his thin face in an unenthusiastic halo; the raw, cracked skin on his hands has calmed down a little, and now they're just spotted with pink weals, over the knuckles and along the edges. The sword's still slung at his side, but it's out of sight.

The small bowl he's slowly making his way through is mostly soup, with rice submerged beneath it and some green onion sliced on top. There's a complicated-looking giant purple book open on the table in front of him.

The quiet luxury all around him feels less uncanny than it did, but it's still bad enough. It's as if he's dead.

The capital of the Japanese Autonomous Oblast is a sprawling city of not quite a million people - and almost all of it is tents. Everyone in it knows how important it is never to be cornered, to have as many exits available as you can find, or make. June is shading into cool, melting subarctic summer, and along with the endless mosquitoes - at least it's not a malaria zone - the siafu are threatening to emerge. Time to wait out the warmer months and wait to see if this year will be the time they're finally overrun. Whether they'll come out of some hitherto overlooked enclave, or out of the ocean that surrounds Kamchatka on three sides, from the shallow bay that faces on to the camp in the far distance.
